PLUMBING LEAK DETECTION TIPS FOR HOMEOWNERS.
Leaks from plumbing fixtures, fittings and pipes account for 80% of water waste among households? According to studies, a typical home can waste about 2,000 up to 20,000 gallons of water annually all because of leaks.
TOILET LEAKS
Toilets are among the most common sources of water leaks at home. If you suspect a leak on your toilet, here’s what you have to do. First of all, check the toilet tank and its flush mechanisms. Inspect the water level and make sure that it’s not higher than an inch above the overflow tube. Otherwise, water will slowly drip into the tub and flow down the toilet drain. This could be caused by a damaged or worn out refill valve; a damaged float or a water level that’s set too high.
By placing a couple drops of food coloring into the tank you can observe if the water in the bowl turns the same color as the dye. This will tell you the leak between the tank and the bowl.
FIXTURE LEAKS
Check for drips. A slow dripping faucet is responsible for thousands of gallon in a year. Wrap a paper towel around the specific part where you suspect the leak. If the paper towel turns wet, then that's a confirmed leakage.
WATER SUPPLY LINES
More difficult to find since they are mostly behind walls and floors. If you observe constantly wet floor areas or moist walls that is a sign of a underground leak or behind wall leak.
WATER METER LEAKS
To confirm a leak in your home, check the water meter. Simply turn off all water supply valves in your property, inside and out. After doing this check your meter and note the reading. Give the meter about 15 minutes before coming back and checking again. If the reading changes then you have a leak somewhere in between the house and the meter. If you shut off the main valve in your home then chances are the leak is between the meter and the main valve. This is good test for large leaks not small ones.
Water leaks only worsen through time; it would be wise for you to deal with it as early as possible. Early detection and repair shall save you money and prevent damage to your house. If you ignore it, you are only postponing something you should do anyway.
